Within/Without is a 35mm photo essay that seeks to draw connections between the individual self and a shared social fabric. Borrowing from documentary aesthetics, I photographed my family, neighbors, and my childhood home in Pakistan to draw connections between the architecture of a home, the porous barriers of a space, the physicality of a body, and the inner lives of community members. I aim to complicate the seemingly opposite notions of interior and exterior, self and other, individual and collective. The work simultaneously speaks to my own immigrant experience.
