As One They Quake has been produced as a fundraiser to support the production costs for Sobia Ahmad's upcoming 16mm film project, set to begin in early 2025. With this purchase, you will support the future development of Ahmad's work at a pivotal moment in her practice.
This photograph is part of Ahmad’s ongoing, multifaceted work with Pando across various projects and installations. Pando, an ancient aspen forest in Utah, is unified by an immense root system. Ahmad took this image on 35mm black–and–white film, processed it in a coffee-based developer, and produced a unique negative contact print in the darkroom. The final image is an inverse of how we typically see the world and has been enlarged and printed on archival Japanese asuka paper. The rich textures and golden tone are due to stains and artifacts from the homemade eco-friendly developer.
For the last two years, Ahmad's film, photography, mixed media works, and public art projects have centered on Pando. Located across 106 acres in south-central Utah, Pando is a forest of one tree with interconnected roots. Believed to be over 10,000 years old, it is the largest known organism on land. Pando embodies many of the core ideas in Ahmad's work. She sees its root system as a guiding metaphor for interconnectedness and many entangled worlds and ways of knowing.
