Within/Without is a 35mm photo essay that seeks to draw connections between the individual self and a shared social fabric. Borrowing from documentary aesthetics, I photographed my family, neighbors, and my childhood home in Pakistan to draw connections between the architecture of a home, the porous barriers of a space, the physicality of a body, and the inner lives of community members. I aim to complicate the seemingly opposite notions of interior and exterior, self and other, individual and collective. The work simultaneously speaks to my own immigrant experience. Click on each image to enlarge it.
